The alterations and additions to the initial small family residence in Klein Windhoek, resulted in an impressive family home enhanced by its successful integration of outdoor spaces. The challenge was to enlarge the kitchen. The solution included a studio on top of the new kitchen with a veranda in front of it. Orientation and proportions were the most important factors in this design. A high solid west wall protects the house and verandah from the severe afternoon sun. The same proportional system used for the wall was implemented for the spatial layout and details of the House. Further it was also applied in the design of the structural elements, like the aluminium roof trusses. House Mudge also received an Award of Commendation in 2005 as designed by Rynand Mudge Architects.
